Will horses be in our future? What sort of future, environmental, emotional, who knows? Maybe, maybe not. I hope so, but what was it like for the people of the old West to think about the future of horses? Did they ever dream of how it is today? Probably not! Then again, what sort of Old Wild West person would ever dream we have cars, or any electronics for that matter. Let’s talk about the future of horses.
A horse is horse, she thought to herself. Thinking was a luxury to horses for there hardly is time when you have to keep an eye out for cougars, coyotes, wolves, and of course the two-legged beasts. That and eating. Luckily it’s uncommon to come across any of them. It just so happened to be one of these uncommon days. Peering over the bag of Flash’s back, Dash saw the cougar. Dash could see it creeping toward two fillies playing in the mud. Before Dash could raise the alarm Hurricane came galloping out of nowhere! What a fantastic sight she thought to herself as Hurricane circled the cougar. The cougar lunged forward faster than the eye could see! It didn’t get very far however, Hurricane was ready for it. With a quick twist Hurricane kicked out! In the blink of an eye the cougar was sailing through the air! Dash happened to recall that a cougar is a species of cat, and a cat can twist in midair to land perfectly on it’s paws. Goodness she hated cats! The cougar, as predicted, landed perfectly on it’s paws. Luckily, this cougar is not quite as stupid as it looks. Slinking off into the shadows, the cougar retreated into the plains.
Obviously this is a problem not faced with the majority of horses now, but it was very real for them back then. If horses continue to be taken out of the wild like they are now, then in the very future they will be extinct the wild. Of course there will still be horses, just only in captivity. Ever heard of a Mustang? Not the car!! A Mustang is a riley and squirrely breed of horse that is what most people think of when they think of a wild horse. This is one of the breeds that I personally believe will dwindle out of existence because they aren’t desirable for most horse related things. Although they are pretty. Speaking of horse sports, where are they headed for in this oncoming future? What will probably happen (in my opinion, of course) is barrel racers and Western based sports will lessen in numbers and the English style of riding will prosper and grow. Don’t get me wrong, I like Western sports, but this is what I feel with happen. For now, let’s just continue to love and enjoy horses, for even though the future is inevitable, there’s no use in worrying about it.
